WLS Documentation
WLS Codebooks
The WLS study team publishes electronic codebooks via an online Portal. This advanced platform is based on the DDI-Lifecycle metadata standard and supports integrated documentation of longitudinal datasets like WLS. Researchers can efficiently navigate and search over 14,000 variables, exploring richly-described metadata, longitudinal variable harmonization, and downloading customized documentation.
Below you will find the survey instruments for all rounds of data collection. These can range from copies of physical materials given to participants (like SAQs and consent forms), to graphical representations of interview-questions (we call these flowcharts) asked of participants during telephone or in-person interviews.
A self administered questionnaire, filled out in school, by graduating students from almost all Wisconsin high schools in 1957. A random one-third becoming the WLS sample.
View
A postcard questionnaire sent to the parents of the graduates; focused on further education and work since high school.
View
The first major telephone interview for the graduates. Delving deeper into the socio-demographics of the sample. Also adding a selected sibling sample.
View
A multi-mode survey of interviews and mailed SAQs for the graduates and their selected siblings. Further following up on education, work, wealth, and family. Also expanding into health and cognition.
View
Another large multi-mode survey of interviews and mailed SAQs. Maintaining the collection of all core WLS concepts with a stronger focus on health and cognition. Also added a one-time interview with a spouse sample.
View
Yet another large multi-mode survey of interviews and mailed SAQs for the aging graduates and siblings. Pushing further into all aspects of the WLS core concepts and shifting towards others surrounding later life.

The link below compiles all of the survey instruments that were used to collect data from participants of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS) since the first effort in 1957 through the current ongoing effort that began in 2020.
NOTE: this document exceeds 1,000 pages, it is strongly recommended to use the “bookmarks” incorporated into the pdf.

Below you will find all available appendix information listed in the codebooks (or other WLS legacy documentation). These are meant to add context to many variables, but are not essential reading. If you have any questions please contact us.
